Intragastric Balloon
The Intragastric balloons are a class of weight loss procedure in which an inflatable device, the balloon, is inserted into the stomach through and endoscope and then inflated with saline solution. The balloon helps patients lose weight because it allows patients to experience a strong sense of fullness with less food than previously. Patients lose around 20-25% of their excess weight. The balloons are temporary, meaning patients must “take a break” periodically. After every six or twelve months of therapy, the balloon is removed (also through an endoscope). After six months, it can be replaced if desired. For a full run-down of the pro’s and con’s of the balloon procedure, make an appointment to meet with Dr. Fitzer.
